Are you Deaf or Hard of Hearing?

Do you feel you need some additional support from us to communicate more effectively with the practice?

Our New Patient Medical questionnaire has some questions regarding your "Preferred method of Communication"

About 20% of people over 18 years have some form of hearing impairment.  Such patiient's patients may have difficulty communicating effectively during a consultation with their GP and such encounters are increasing as the population ages.

We wish to share with you the various options available at the practice which may improve your access to our services:

  • INDUCTION LOOP SYSTEM - is available at the practice reception and in the consultation room.  This will help preserve patient confidentiality.
  • PATIENT INFORMATION SCREENS - are available in the main waiting area and all information is available in text or subtitled.
  • EMAIL - Reception.Z00477@gp.hscni.net - you can use this method of communication with us.  We would ask that within your email you clearly identify yourself as Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
  • TEXT MESSAGE - we have a system in place at the practice where your GP can contact you by text and you can reply, directly back to your GP - this is a confidential service between the patient and GP only.
  • NI INTERPRETING SERVICE - offers access to both Irish and British Sign Language Interpreters and staff can make arrangements to book one for your appointment.

We would encourage our patients to obtain their own "Personalised Communication Card" from the RNID click in this link Create a personalised digital communication card - RNID and present this card at any booked appointment here at the practice or any other facility where this information would be useful.

Please inform practice staff of your PREFERRED METHOD of communication and this will be marked clearly on your medical file, available to all practice staff and with your permission will be shared on as part of any onward referral we might make on your behalf.

We have recently provided updated Deaf Awareness Training for all Practice Staff and hope that as a result of this you will find it easier to access GP/Healthcare Services.

Regards
